about
Cameroonian-born, Paris-based artist Astrønne shares "Reconnect", her debut single for rising London record label Touching Bass. Self-written and recorded, the song marks her official introduction as a solo artist following an already head-turning start to her career.
Fresh from mesmerising performances at both Pitchfork Paris and Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here Festival, early radio support from Benji B and support slots with Ibeyi (Belgium), Curtis Harding (Paris), Contour (Paris), Jeanne Added and November Ultra, "Reconnect" sees the 23 year old speak directly to her initial supercharged engagement with being a musician.
The single is partly about “gauging how genuine my interactions are in the music industry, keeping my head on my shoulders, my blood cold and holding on to the little tiny bit of perspective I have in order to make intelligent decisions”.
But it's also about the Jungian concept of the 'wounded healer', a framework Astrønne finds useful in understanding her practice; the healer is compelled to heal as he is wounded, the mental transmogrifications accessed by the music. This, in a city that can feel hostile, like Paris; whether that's through lack of space, light or connection with others or yourself.
The single is a moment of healing through opening up, reconnecting “don’t hide, don’t hide, I promise I won’t judge”; a reflection on the catharsis of live performance for listener and musician.
lyrics
I had to reconnect
Everything to loose
I had to reconnect
All the faking got me tied up to my bed
All the attention wasn’t love
Love
I felt so damn vain
Under pressure the diamond’s bout to break
Just like my attempts to run after my trains
I felt vain
Don’t hide, Don’t hide
I promise I won’t judge
I won’t judge
Don’t try, Don’t try
To act like you’re not hurt
You’re not
Don’t hide, Don’t hide
I promise I won’t judge
I won’t judge
Don’t try, Don’t try
To act like you’re not hurt
You’re not
You’re not
You’re not
You’re not
You’re not
You’re not hurt, You’re not hurt
You’re not hurt, You’re not hurt
You’re not hurt, You’re not hurt
You’re not hurt, You’re not hurt
You’re not hurt, You’re not hurt
You’re not hurt, You’re not hurt
You’re not hurt, You’re not hurt
You’re not hurt, You’re not hurt
Don’t hide, Don’t hide
I promise I won’t judge
I won’t judge
Don’t try, Don’t try
To act like you’re not hurt
You’re not
Don’t hide, Don’t hide
I promise I won’t judge
I won’t judge
Don’t try, Don’t try
To act like you’re not hurt
You’re not

A wonderful compilation of so many brilliantly talented artists all in one album! The flow of the music is simply spot on. All the tracks are my favourite tracks. Perfect. Thanks to everyone who made this album. majhium
Great album! A crossover jazz-r'nb-african trip from continent to continent. London does it again. Nyubian Twist with more jazz overtones. John Woodward
Just a beautiful jazzy rap album with buttery smooth flows versed with huge talent. It's not only lovely to the ears, but the lyrics are profound and empowering about the struggles that she faces. zhangtastic
